To invite more Hong Kongers to participate in a plant-based diet, the design project “素mate” (pronunciation: Soulmate, 素 meaning plant-based) focuses on promoting the idea of “flexitarian” - the concept of eating less meat and more vegetables, gradually reducing the types and amount of meat consumed. The designs offer the users a more adaptable and gradual experience to change their diet, debunk misconceptions and stereotypes, and attempt to create a more supportive environment.

App Design

To make plant-based diet adaptable and gradual, the design project leads with a virtual pet mobile game that incentivizes users to reduce meat consumption step by step by raising vegetable characters. The game provides customizable support and schedules for the users to persist the diet in the long term.
The virtual pet mobile app includes different functions to inform, encourage, remind and record. Users can take pictures of their meals to record the nutrition and benefits they obtained. This also includes functions such as interaction with the characters, short and long term record, meal exploration, and friend system.

Physical Products
A group of physical supporting products are designed to be used with the mobile app, including a tote bag with a keychain, cutlery set, and water bottle. They work as encouragement and visual triggers in daily life when the user is not using the app, thereby letting the user persist the change.
The content on each design connects to the form and function of the particular product, such as including a reusable grocery list on the tote bag to encourage users to buy more vegetable, and using the water bottle as measuring unit to offer information about on the water preservation effect of cutting down on meat.
Leftlet
The leaflet aims to make the meatless option visible on more restaurants’ menu, to provide more options for the customers and make plant-based diet easily adaptable and persist. The restaurant owners can simply use stickers to add to the existing menu to show the option.
The leaflet is cut with a leaf shape to create a unique outlook, and the cover is designed with an iris mechanism to visualizes the ease of providing a meatless option.

Tabletop Sticker
Tabletop stickers are designed to be displayed on restaurants’ dining table, and aimed to debunk misconceptions and stereotypes on plant-based diet, and encourage the public to try the meatless option.
The design of the stickers mimic a dish, and the viewers can flip open the transparent sheet that mimics a piece of meat, to reveal the benefits and facts about plant-based diet, mimicking the action of going meatless.
